WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT
Atkins, Iowa

Over the last several years the City of Atkins experienced a steady increase of residential development.  As a result, City Leaders began planning for future infrastructure improvements to meet the demands of continued growth.

One of the most pressing infrastructure issues included the 40-year-old sanitary treatment facility.  After an engineering review of the City's wastewater problems it was decided a new wastewater treatment facility was needed

Ament, Inc. was hired to design the City's new wastewater treatment plant.  The new plant included the construction of four treatment cells
.
Two cells have a capacity of four million gallons and two cells have a capacity of 1.2 million gallons.
The upper (larger) cells are designed to detain wastewater for a period of approximately 30 days and the lower (smaller) cells are designed to detain wastewater for a period of approximately 10 days.

The project also involved the design and construction of approximately 5,900 linear feet of sanitary sewer gravity main, 10,400 linear feet of sanitary sewer force main, 65,000 cubic yards of earthwork, 85,000 square feet of geotechnical membrane, a sanitary sewer lift station and aeration system.  The new system will provide many years of service to the community and has the capacity to handle the continued growth of the City of Atkins.
