DOWNTOWN STREETSCAPE PROJECT

This project involved the reconstruction of three downtown Cedar Rapids blocks to provide a user-friendlier pedestrian environment. The project included total reconstruction of sidewalk on all three blocks to provide such aesthetic properties as brick pavers, trees, benches, planters, and decorative pedestrian lighting.
The roadway sections on two of the blocks were scarified and overlaid and on one block total reconstruction was necessary.
Project challenges included working closely with utilities, evaluation and incorporation of storm sewer, structural analysis of under-sidewalk building vaults, electrical plans for lighting, and complying with ADA guidelines.
Construction cost: $1.36 million.
