JOHNSON AVENUE NW RECONSTRUCTION
Traffic Study, Roadway Reconstruction,
Traffic Signal Modification

City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Key Features

  • Turning movement counts
  • Intersection capacity analysis
  • Roadway widening for the addition of exclusive left- turn lanes
  • Signal modification design
  • Acquisition plat preparation
  • Staged construction
  • Iowa DOT review

This project involved the reconstruction and widening of Johnson Avenue NW to provide exclusive left-turn lanes on both approaches at the intersection of Edgewood Road NW.  Johnson Avenue NW is a minor arterial roadway carrying over 15,000 vehicles per day.  Edgewood Road NW is a major arterial roadway carrying over 25,000 vehicles per day.   The study phase of the project involved data collection and analysis including base mapping, review of construction record drawings and existing studies, intersection turning movement counts, and intersection capacity and level of service analysis.

The design phase of the project involved the development of preliminary and final construction documents including plans, specifications, and opinions of anticipated construction cost.  The project required intersection reconstruction and traffic signal modification to be performed under traffic.  This required the development of a complex five-stage traffic control and staging plan for the intersection and its four approaches.

The project also involved the development of legal descriptions and acquisition plats for obtaining additional roadway right-of-way to accommodate the proposed improvements.
